Soyaya

Ghanaian-born Mohammed Shaibu leads his Seattle-based band, Soyaya, with virtuoso acoustic guitar, dynamic talking drum, and endearing vocals. The name "Soyaya" means "affection" in the Hausa language of West Africa.

The music of Soyaya is a combination of Highlife, Palm Wine, and indigenous Rhythm and Blues.

Backing Mohammed are Caxambu from Brazil on percussion and vocals, Etienne Cakpo from Benin on percussion and dance, and Thierno Diop from Senegal on percussion and vocals.

Biography

Mohammed teaches music to children in the public schools, as well as lecturing in the Ethnomusicology Department at the University of Washington.

Mr. Shaibu's previous claims to fame include his work with Fela Kuti, I.K. Dairo, O.J. Ekemode, the Nigerian All-Stars, Tony Allen, and Baba Olatunji.

Look for a slender young Mohammad playing guitar in this O.J. Ekemode video from 1987. He first appears about 40 seconds into the video.
